Let’s talk Chiropractic and Pregnancy!

Should you be adjusted during pregnancy?

‘It has been reported that approximately 50% of all pregnant women experience back pain during their pregnancy and 50% to 75% of women experience back pain during labour’. These figures aren’t surprising when you consider all the physical and hormonal changes the body undergoes over 9 months. As bub develops the pelvis changes shape, ligament laxity increases, and gait is affected. All these can cause mum to be quite uncomfortable. Chiropractic can relieve the pain and discomfort of these symptoms, with gentle spinal manipulation and soft tissue release. This in turn allows mum to move better and bub to have optimal space. 75% of pregnant patients who received chiropractic care during their pregnancies stated that they found relief from pain.

Is exercise safe during pregnancy?

Outside of regular adjustments throughout pregnancy, staying active is also crucial for mum and foetus health. Roughly 150 mins is recommended or 2.5hrs, with two sessions a week for strength training. Strength training in pregnancy can be – Pilates, body weight or light weights, prenatal yoga. In uncomplicated pregnancies Mum to be can usually continue to exercise how she did prior to conceiving, modifying where necessary. However some activities to avoid are heavy contact, and heavy weights. Exercise is recommended, as maintaining or even increasing your strength makes labour easier. Moving can release tension build up and reduces the risk of gestation diabetes and pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure). The chiropractors at Granger Chiropractic are qualified to care for you from prenatal to postnatal, with adjustments and tailored exercise programs for your current ability.
