Most of us have heard of Magnesium before and may even be taking a supplement already. But what is it, and why is it so important?
Magnesium is a mineral, naturally found in food and required in over 300 enzyme systems in the body. (1) Every cell in our body contains magnesium and requires it to function. It’s roles include but are not limited to energy creation, protein formation, gene maintenance, muscle movements and nervous system regulation. Considering how much we use magnesium it is unsurprising that few adults meet the Recommended Daily Intake (RDI) of 400-420mg for men and 310-320mg for women.
Foods that are high in Magnesium include:
- almonds, 30g (80mg of magnesium)
- spinach, boiled, ½ cup (78mg)
- cashews, 30g (74mg)
- peanuts, ¼ (63mg)
- soymilk, 1 cup (61mg)
- oatmeal, 1 cup cooked (6 mg)
- bread, whole wheat, 2 slices (46mg)
- avocado, cubed, 1 cup (44mg)
- rice, brown, cooked, ½ cup (42mg)
Supplements are a great way to meet your RDI. There are lots of different types of Magnesium supplements out there but Magnesium Bisglycinate, is readily absorbed and gentle on digestion.
