Shin Splints is the common name for Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (MTSS). It refers to pain along the shin bone causes by repetitive force to the shin (tibia) and musculature. (1)
Patients can report:
• A dull ache in the lower leg
• Pain during exercise
• Tenderness and soreness along the shin
• Mild inflammation of shin
MTSS is an overuse condition, often seen in those who partake in an excess of running or activities that are high impact, for example soccer and basketball.
There is a higher risk of developing MTSS with the following:
• Flat feet
• Sudden increase in training intensity
• Poor form – over pronation
• Weak ankles
• Incorrect foot wear
• Training on uneven and hard terrain
At home Shin Splints can be managed with rest, ice, anti-inflammatory painkillers and a shift to low impact training; think swimming / walking. If the above symptoms sound familiar to you, discuss it with your Chiropractor. They are qualified to analyse gait and biomechanics of the lower limb and can develop a management plan for you to reduce symptoms and avoid recurring strain.
