Plantar Fasciitis is a commonly heard diagnosis for foot pain, but what does it actually mean?
The Plantar Fascia is fibrous connective tissue that connects from your heel (Calcaneus) to the ball of your foot (Metatarsals). The Plantar fascia is integral in maintaining stability in the foot and arch support.
Plantar Fasciitis is inflammation within the plantar Fascia due to overuse and/or micro tears. Inflammation or micro tears commonly occur near the heel which is why calcaneal pain is often reported. Pain is often worse after prolonged periods of rest, so think first thing in the morning when taking your first steps or after sitting for a long time. Prolonged standing/ walking can also aggravate the fascia. Plantar Fasciitis most commonly presents in runners and people between the age of 40-60. A high BMI is also a risk factor for plantar fasciitis.
Chiropractors are qualified to assess for various extremity conditions, such as Plantar Fasciitis. If the above symptoms sound familiar, ask your Chiropractor about it!
