Is your pillow stopping you from having a good night’s sleep? Waking with Headaches? Neck pain?

We’ve discussed previously the importance of good sleep posture (here). A crucial component of this is having the correct pillow, one that is supportive and comfortable. If your pillow is incorrect, there is an increase in muscle soreness and joint stiffness in the neck, causing you to wake with headaches, a feeling of fatigue and poor sleep quality.

What to look for if you are a side sleeper: A pillow that fits the gap between your shoulder and neck keeping your head balanced and neutral. If the pillow is too high your neck is pushed upward or conversely too low, your head will drop towards the bed. Both these errors can lead to discomfort and strain. If you sleep on your back it is still necessary to use a pillow that fits under your neck without lifting your chin up or causing your chin to tuck down. When laying on your back, your ears should be in line with your shoulders to ensure the best fit.

For either of these postures, contour pillows are recommended. We stock a range of contour pillows so if you are suffering during the night because of your pillow, please don’t hesitate to ask our chiropractors about finding a pillow that will work for you!
